Coaching Staff

Rick Millington

Head Coach and Senior Group Coach

Rick has coached swimming for nearly 40 years, and for more than 25 years with the Aquabears.  Rick is an ASCA-certified level 5 coach (their highest level).  Several of Rick's swimmers have been successful at all levels, including Olympic Trials, Nationals, and Junior Nationals.  Many of his Senior swimmers have moved on to successful college swimming careers.  Rick has been head coach of the Aquabears since 1992.

Rick has head coach for the U.S. National Team trip to Brazil in 2000.  He was head coach of the 1987 Pacific Swimming All-Star Team, and was a member of the 1985 Olympic Festival Coaching Staff.  He was nominated as Pacific Swimming Coach of the Year in 1993.  Rick has coached at several camps at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He was Matt Biondi's first USA Swimming coach, and coached Olympian Chrissy Ahmann-Leighton for four years.

Rick has been head coach of the women's water polo and men's and women's swim team at Diablo Valley College since 1996.  He has been voted California Community College Swim Coach of the Year seven times, and won State Swimming Championships in 1996, 2002, 2003, and 2007.  Rick has produced over 150 Junior College Swimming and Water Polo All-Americans.

As head swim and water polo coach as San Ramon Valley High School, he won three consecutive North Coast Section Swimming Championships, and several of his swimmers were honored as All-Americans.

Mike Heaney

Mike Heaney has been coaching for the Aquabears since 1986, and has produced some of the finest age-group and senior swimmers in the nation.  Several of his swimmers have set National and Pacific Age Group Records.  Many of his Aquabear swimmers have been ranked in the National Top 16 and Pacific Top Ten 10, qualified for Western Zone, Pacific, and Zone 2 All-Star Teams, and have won individual titles at both the Pacific Age Group and Far Western Championship Meets.  Mike has coach Pacific camps, and was a member of the 1992, 1994, and 1997 Zone 2 All-Star Team Coaching staffs.  He was nominated in the 1993 and 1998 for Pacific Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year, and won the award in 2004.

Mike is currently also the Head Swim Coach at Northgate High School.  He also coached the College Park high school team for 10 years and the Carondelet teams for two.  He coached several North Coast Champions, and many of his swimmers were honored as High School All-Americans.

Mike also coaches for the Walnut Creek Masters, and has been swimming competitively now for 36 years.

Todd Krohn

Head Age Group Coach & Pre-Senior Coach

In his eleven years with the Aquabears, Todd has coached every group on the team.  He started in 1996 as a fall program assistant for the Purples and Pre-Seniors.  He started coaching year round in 1997, and then ran the Blackhawk satellite program for three years.  He is now the Pre-Seniors coach.  Todd's swimmers have been ranked in the National Top 16 and Pacific Top 10, won individual events at the Pacific Age Group and Far Western Championship Meets, and have successfully moved on to swim in college.  He coached the Zone 2 All Star Team four times, and was head coach in 1998 and 2006.  Todd is also on the Pacific Swimming Board of Directors.

Todd is in his fifth year as assistant women's water polo coach and associate men's and women's swim coach at Diablo Valley College.  The Vikings won the Swimming & Diving State Championship in 2002, 2003, and 2007.  He coached three years at Bentley and six years at Las Lomas High School.  His teams consistently placed in the top 3 at North Coast, and were North Coast Champions in 1995.  Several Knights were Individual FAL, DFAL, and NCS champions, and were honored as NISCA All-Americans.

Todd coached in the summer rec leagues for ten years (4 at LMYA, and 6 at Orinda Country Club).  Several of his swimmers were County Champions.

Michelle Ghiggeri

White Group Coach

Michelle is in her 13th year with the Aquabears age-group program.  She does an excellent job teaching stroke technique to our White group swimmers.  She coached the rec team at Valley Vista for five years, and is a fourth grade teacher at the Palmer School in Walnut Creek.  Michelle swims for the Walnut Creek Masters.

Nicole Dewes

Senior Group Assistant Coach

Nicole is in her third year as senior group assistant.  She helps all swimmers with a specific focus on the sprint and stroke groups.  Nicole coached Carondelet High School to a North Coast victory in 2000.  She also coached Livorna rec team for 4 years.  Growing up, Nicole initially participated in the Aquabears Fall Program and then joined the team year round.  She was a North Coast and NCAA champion in the 50 freestyle.  She placed fifth at Olympic Trials in 1996 and attended the World University Games.  She returned to the Aquabears after college and continued swimming to compete in the Short Course World Championships and Pan Pacific Games where she earned a gold and bronze medal.  She has two kids and loves beagles.
